Every one wants to create and nurture a happy family. "Being happy as a family is something deeper than simply having fun together or feeling the immediate euphoria of a joyful event like opening presents on Christmas morning”, explains Scott Haltzman, M.D, author of the new book The Secrets of Happy Families. A happy family is a family that has a deep sense of meaning and purpose in their lives. When you have that, he adds, the lows feel more manageable, because you can put them into perspective — and the highs are more memorable.

5 Great Gift Ideas for Women

Every year for the holidays, I always have trouble finding a gift for my mother, aunties, girlfriend, and sister. It's amusing because I need seem to have the same problem when it comes to my father, or brother. The problem is women, they are basically impossible to shop for.
Looking for a gift is much like looking for the needle in the haystack. Except for in this case, you don't even know what the needle looks like! If you're anything like me, then you'll want a solution to this problem quick. The holidays are approaching soon, and you are still without a gift. Fortunately for you, I have a quick solution for you.

One trick I have learned is to listen to my heart. Gifts are displays of compassion. If your heart isn't in it, your gift surely won't be. The first step is to identify the person you are getting a gift for. I like to then identify the type of person she is.
Is she outgoing? Does she love gardening? What are her interests, what are her hobbies? If you don't know these answers, then you'll have to do a bit of research. Finding a gift for someone is much easier when you know what they want. Here are a few categories you can work from.

How You Can Make Reading Fun For Your Kids

Reading is important for kids, but sometimes they just aren't motivated to do it because it doesn't seem like much fun to sit still and concentrate. Reading can be fun but it takes a little creativity first, and for many mothers, creativity comes naturally. However, for many other moms, this isn't something that comes naturally. Therefore, below you will find several helpful ways you can help make reading to children fun.

Read in the Dark: I know, it sounds impossible right? Well, the reason this will be fun for your kids is because it's completely different than the usual way they're supposed to read. You can give them a small flashlight to use as they sit in their bed before bedtime or you can make a fun "fort" out of sheets and let them light a candle or use a flashlight (depending on their age) to read.

Use a Chart: Some kids like to see the progress they're making with the things they are doing. For these kids, make a reading chart. One that allows them to track how many pages a day they are reading while charting how many books a month they read. To make it more fun, you can give them a small prize when they read so many pages a week or so many books a month. It will give your children something to work for, which will help motivate them and make reading fun too!

Success Comes Effortlessly - If You've Got Your Head in Shape

The normal mind ' and we're all burdened with normality ' is simply not fit to run life's great race.   And lack of mental fitness just about sums the normal person up.  For all of your adult life, you've been mindlessly slouching on a couch, like a slob, watching re-runs of old movies ' the movies of your formative years that your subconscious mind thrives on.  Research shows that this is where our subconscious mind lives ' in the past.  It uses the past to try to make sense of the present and, in the process, makes a complete nonsense of it.   As things stand, you're not even fit enough to take a light mental jog!

However, life is not a light jog - life's more like a cross-country race! And, if you haven't properly trained yourself, you won't be able to run it like you should.  The amazing things is, though, if you do bother to take even a little mental exercise, you will suddenly realize that life is not, in fact, a marathon at all - it's only our unfit normal crazy mind that makes it so.  In the right state of mind, life is a gentle, enjoyable and effortless stroll in the park.  Have you ever experienced the peace and calm of that stroll?  Is carefree and effortless living something that you have experienced?   If you haven't, it's because you're an unfit mental slob and it's your own fault.

Accenting The Special Pieces In Your Home

While your home may be filled with a variety of items that are useful or meaningful, there may be a few things that you really treasure and want to highlight. This may be a memento from the past, something you inherited from a family member or a piece of art that you invested in and plan to pass along to your relatives. If you have something you want to stand out and be treasured in your home, there are decorating tips you can use to accent the piece and enable it to really get noticed. Not only will visitors in your home notice it, you will be able to focus on it and really enjoy your investment. Lighting is a great way to accent a piece and using a grand piano lamp or piano light is a great way to bring attention to something. The lighting is often subtle, but is just enough to draw the eye in and help you focus on something that is special.
Using color to accent a piece is a great way to draw attention to something. Different colors give off different feelings, so if you want to highlight something and create a sense of calm or serenity, choose colors that are cool and relaxing. If you want to bring a feeling of excitement to a piece, choose warm, bright colors like red or purple. Remember colors reflect lighting in different ways and the accent colors you choose should contrast with the item to really make it stand out. Choose an accent color that is directly across from the color of your special piece on the color wheel to really make the piece stand out.

Another way to accent furniture is to remove color from the space surrounding it. Instead of choosing a color that will make your item stand out, accent it with a complete lack of color. A plain space will allow the attention in the room to focus on the special item you want to highlight. The eye is drawn to the item in the room that has color and pattern when the surrounding area is white and void of color and pattern.

Here are the keys to building a family life that will make your guy, your kids, and you truly happy.

1. Know who they are

When your family agrees on its core values — and consistently lives by those standards — you'll build a stronger family identity and reduce conflict. Certain values fall into place naturally; if you're married, you and your husband probably committed to each other in the first place because of values that both of you share.

However, Haltzman insists on not simply letting your values evolve on their own, but rather deliberately shaping and naming your core principles. "Defining your values together cannot only reinforce a lot of the qualities that brought you together, but it can also help steer you in times when you feel conflicted," he says.

2. Lean on others

No family thrives in a bubble — your extended relatives, friends, neighbors, and other networks are crucial to your happiness. "Other families expose kids to new ideas and lifestyles and give them a broader view of their roles in their own family as well as in their community," Haltzman says.

If you don't have a built-in network, Haltzman suggests creating your own support system through volunteering, joining the PTA or a book club, participating in religious services, or simply reaching out to your neighbors.

3. Bounce back

Truly happy families have the resiliency to face life's challenges and stay strong. "Going through difficult times can actually make you feel more connected as a family," Haltzman says.

4. Breathe

Families do better when they have plenty of laid-back time together. Whether you're going for a walk, playing Rock Band, making cookies, or just hanging out, the best way to build happy family connections is simply to enjoy one another spontaneously. "You can spend your life defining your goals, setting your values, and putting all the right things into place," Haltzman says, "but you also have to take a step back and live a little."
